Herb Deromedi graduated from Royal Oak High School and attended the University of Michigan where he played football along with classmate Darrell Harper, who is also a member of the ROHS Hall of Fame. He received a bachelor's and a master's degree from the U of M.

His coaching career began while he was in college. He was a volunteer coach with the varsity and the coach of the seventh and eighth grade teams at University High School.

Coach Deromedi worked at the high school level in Byron High School and Royal Oak Kimball. In 1967 he received a call to become a member of the staff at Central Michigan University. There he coached the defense while the school program grew to be National Champion Division II and then a member of the Mid-American Conference.

Herb Deromedi became the head coach at CMU in 1978. When his head coaching experience ended he had been recognized as Conference Coach of the Year twice accumulating a record of 110-55-10 and three conference championships. The 110 victories were the most in history by any MAC coach. His two victories over Michigan State remain the only two losses that school suffered at the hands of a MAC school.

In 1994 Her Deromedi became the Athletic Director at Central Michigan University--a position he held for ten years. Coach Deromedi is a member of the Central Michigan University Athletic Hall of Fame, the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame, the MAC Sports Hall of Fame and in 2008 he became a member of the National College Football Hall of Fame.

Herb Deromedi was inducted into the Royal Oak High School Hall of Fame in 1996.
