Iverson "Ivy" Loftin grew up in Arkansas. He attended Wayne State University where he played football.

He served his country in the United States Navy.

Loftin taught at the high school from 1953 to 1986. He coached football for 36 years at the high school. He began as an assistant coach at Royal Oak High School and became the first head coach of Dondero when Kimball and Dondero were created. He spent 27 years as the head coach.

Teams coached by Loftin were usually successful winning 14 championships in the Border Cities League or the Metro Suburban Activities League. He was selected league coach of the year and area coach of the year numerous times. In 1975 he was chosen by the Detroit News as the Coach of the Year. Loftin was inducted into the Michigan High School Coaches Hall of Fame in 1983. In 1993 he was chosen to be one of the two head coaches of Michigan High School All-Star Football teams. In 1996, Ivy Loftin was inducted into the Royal Oak High School Hall of Fame.
