Larry Streeter

Royal Oak Teacher 1967-2003

Advisor to Dondero High School Student Senate

Michigan Student Councils Hall of Fame Inductee, 2013

Inducted into Royal Oak High School Hall of Fame, 2014

Larry Streeter qualifies two ways for entrance into the Hall of Fame—as a former student and as a successful teacher. He was a student of the Royal Oak School system attending Whittier, Oakridge, Mary Lyon, and he graduated from Kimball High School in 1962. Larry attended Bob Jones University where he served as a class officer and captained the soccer team. In 1967 he earned a degree in education and a listing in Who’s Who in American Colleges.

“Streeter,” as he was affectionately called, taught in Royal Oak for 36 years --27 of them at Dondero High School. He was a role model for the students and teachers and an enthusiastic morale builder. His bulletin boards recognized outstanding Dondero graduates long before there was a formal Hall of Fame. In 1987 Larry was the teacher of the year in Royal Oak and a finalist for the WDIV Outstanding Educator Award. He was also included in the 1992 edition of Who’s Who in American Education.

While he was an athletic coach and an outstanding English teacher, Larry is best known for his work with student activities, the student government and student leadership programs. Students were encouraged by Larry to develop their potential, act responsibly and charitably. With his encouragement the student senators helped the Daily Tribune create the Give a Christmas program in Royal Oak. They also involved themselves in many other community service projects. Every year was a canned food drive, and one year, the students collected 20,000 cans of food for the Salvation Army. Each year the senate sponsored a volleyball marathon to raise money to support Beaumont’s Children’s Miracle Network and provide food baskets for needy families in Royal Oak.

Larry and his senators were often asked to speak and provide leadership roles at county, state and national leadership conferences. Larry, himself, gave enthusiastic talks and presentations at camps hosted at various Michigan universities, as well as various state and national conferences. Upon his retirement, Larry was hired by the Michigan Association of Student Councils to boost membership and improve public relations.

The Dondero Student Senate earned the Michigan Association of Student Councils Award of Excellence for ten years under Larry’s guidance. Larry himself was recognized as the State of Michigan Student Council Adviser of the year in 1995 and 2003, and in 2014, Mr. Streeter was inducted into the Michigan Student Councils Hall of Fame.
